Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, is a building certification process developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).The USGBC developed the LEED certification process to enhance environmental awareness among architects and building contractors, and to encourage the design and construction of energy-efficient, water-conserving buildings that use sustainable or green resources and materials.
The LEED certification process uses a point system to determine the environmental merits of a building; there are different rating systems for homes, commercial buildings, interior renovations, schools, neighborhood developments, and other construction projects.
For most projects, there are four levels of LEED certification, depending on how many points the project has earned: certified, silver, gold or platinum. According to the USGBC, there are key areas measured by LEED:
Portable water saving 40 % from efficient flow/flush fixtures and rainwater harvesting
Energy saving of 23 % from efficient water cooled package type air-conditioning system, efficient lighting and heat reflective glass.
More than 80 % of construction waste diverted from landfill
Local material accounted for 40 % of material used for construction
An erosion and sedimentation control plan confirming to 2003 EPA construction general permit implemented
Extensive use of recycled material for construction which accounts for 20 % of material used
Glass façade provides daylight and views for 80 % of regularly occupied spaces
Zero use of CPC based refrigerants on site to reduce Ozone layer depletion potential.
Paints and sealants with low VOC ( < 50 g/l ) used for interiors
Roofing with high solar reflective index (SRI >78) installed to reduce heat island effect.
